I Don't Need Help Coming Out of My Shell. 😂

On being quiet without being broken — and why 'come out of your shell' isn't the compliment people think it is.

You know what I hate? When people assume you need a little encouragement just because you’re quiet.

“Come on, don’t be shy!”

“Speak up!”

“Come out of your shell!”

WHO SAID I WAS IN A SHELL?! 😭

I swear, some extroverts really be projecting their own experiences onto introverts like we all went through the same character development.

You mean to tell me you used to be quiet in third grade, somebody encouraged you to come out of your shell, and now you think everybody who’s reserved just needs that same little push?

Congratulations on your character development, my nigga. But what makes you think that’s my storyline? 😂

That’s what irritates me about being labeled “shy.” People hear that word and immediately picture somebody who’s timid, afraid to speak, or waiting for someone to help them feel comfortable enough to participate.

And then they appoint themselves to help.

But have you ever considered that I might not have the same relationship with social interaction that you do?

Have you considered that being quiet doesn’t necessarily mean I’m uncomfortable? That not wanting to talk all the time doesn’t mean I don’t know how to talk? That I can have a perfectly functional conversation without needing somebody to coach me through it?

And even if I am uncomfortable, what makes you think unsolicited encouragement is going to help?

Sometimes I don’t need encouragement. Sometimes I need time to get comfortable. Sometimes I don’t have anything to say. Sometimes I have plenty to say but don’t feel like sharing it with everybody.

And sometimes, yeah, I might want to participate but feel anxious about how I’ll be perceived.

Those are different situations. But people see a quiet person and treat them all the same.

“Don’t be shy!”

As if I hadn’t considered that option. 💀

What really gets me is the assumption that there’s some version of me waiting on the other side of this supposed shell. A louder, more outgoing version who’s finally going to blossom once somebody teaches me to stop being so reserved.

Maybe I don’t want to be the loudest person in the room.

Maybe I don’t need to fill every silence.

Maybe I don’t measure my comfort around people by how much I talk.

And maybe the goal isn’t for me to become more like you.

Why is being outgoing treated like the finish line everybody needs to reach?

I think some people have such a strong preference for their own way of socializing that they genuinely struggle to understand people who operate differently.

They know what it felt like when THEY were shy. They know what helped THEM open up. So when they encounter somebody quiet, they assume they’re looking at the same problem they once had.

But they’re not necessarily looking at a problem at all.

They’re looking at somebody whose personality, preferences, experiences, or social struggles they haven’t taken the time to understand.

And instead of getting curious, they start correcting.

That’s the part that feels condescending to me.

It’s not that I expect everybody to understand introversion or social anxiety. It’s that I wish people would stop assuming they understand me just because they’ve assigned me a label.

You can want to include me without making me feel like a project.

You can invite me into a conversation without announcing to everybody that I’m shy.

You can give me room to speak without acting like you’re helping me overcome some personal deficiency.

And you can respect my presence without requiring me to perform extroversion to prove I’m comfortable.

I’m not a butterfly waiting for somebody to help me emerge from a cocoon. I’m a grown-ass person trying to exist without everybody turning my personality into a group project.

And for the record, being able to socialize comfortably isn’t the same thing as wanting to socialize constantly.

Some of us aren’t trying to come out of our shells.

Some of us are just tired of people knocking on them. 😂
